MALAYSIA
Malaysia is a multi-racial country in the Asia Pacific region.
The nation with its capital city of Kuala Lumpur, is made up of
the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Bidayuhs, Melanaus, Kadazans,
etc.
The 13 States In Peninsular Malaysia & East Malaysia (Borneo Island)
Malaysia has thirteen states. The eleven states on Peninsular
Malaysia (West Malaysia) are:
- Johor ( Johore )
- Melaka ( Malacca )
- Negeri Sembilan
- Pahang
- Selangor
- Perak
- Pulau Pinang (Penang)
- Kedah
- Perlis
- Terengganu
- Kelantan
The other two states on East Malaysia (on the north of Borneo Island) are:
- Sarawak (the largest state in Malaysia)
- Sabah
Out of the 13 states, 7 states have a "Sultan" each
(Johor, Pahang, Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Terengganu & Kelantan),
1 state has a "Yang DiPertuan Besar" (Negeri Sembilan),
1 state has a "Raja" (Perlis) and
the remaining 4 states (Melaka, Penang, Sarawak & Sabah)
have a "Yang DiPertua Negeri" (Governor) each.
Except the "Yang DiPertua Negeri" of the last 4 states mentioned above,
all the rulers of the other 9 states take turn
to become the "Yang DiPertuan Agung" (King) of Malaysia
for a tenure of 5 years each.
For the 4 states with a "Yang DiPertua Negeri" as the head of state,
each has a "Ketua Menteri" (Chief Minister) to head the state government.
Whereas for the other other 9 states,
each has a "Menteri Besar" (Chief Minister) to run the state government.
The Best of East & West
Malaysia has the best of "East" and "West"
because of its strategic location.
Being located in the middle of South East Asia (with neighbouring
countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, & Brunei),
and being stable politically, has resulted in it
being a favourite destination for foreign investments.
On top of being trained and qualified, the overall work force of
Malaysia is also multi-lingual. Apart from English and
the national language of "Bahasa Malaysia" (the Malay language,
most Malaysians could actually
converse in their own mother tongues too and the languages of the other
races, such as Chinese languages
(Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew, Hainan, Foochow, etc.),
Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, etc.), etc.
Malaysians are known to be employees of very high value because of the fact that
they could speak more than one language and they are sufficiently educated.
Apart from attending Primary School six years (standard 1 - 6)
and Secondary School five years (form 1 - 5),
most children nowadays tend to start schooling quite early by
spending 4 years in pre-school (since they are 3 years old).
Upon finishing 11 years of basic education, school-leavers have choices of
continuing to another 2 years of "Form 6" (equivallent to the "A" level),
or attending College, University, Polytechnic or private institutions of
higher learning. Many students who could afford it and have gained admission,
tend to go overseas to further their education too. Among the favourite
destinations for overseas education are the United Kingdom, United States,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and especially Singapore.
(In recent years, the People's Republic of China has also become a favourite
destination for higher education.)
Being right in the middle of South East Asia, Malaysia has been a favourite
destination for western countries which are planning to invest and expand into
the South East Asia and Asian markets. Afterall, Malaysia is "Truely Asia".
